ambire

ambire, 2026, graphite, ink, gold leaf, grid paper, yellow painter's tape, wooden frame forms, ceramic
I long for a place that holds the place of homeland in my heart. Ambire, which means to ‘ardently long for,’ shares the etymological prefix with ambient and ambiguity. Perhaps that is why the word evokes an embrace, it encircles and surrounds something which cannot be contained. A continuous longing to be…there.
In an attempt to map the instability that accompanies grief and loss, these drawings document speculative journeys traversing over impermanent and precarious terrain, while stacked ceramic pebbles act as waymarkers.
This installation reinterprets previous explorations of mapping and was exhibited as part of between stone and sun at The Mill in Dundee. Photo credits to Alan Richardson
