constellation for an unknown place

Commissioned by Maternal Mitochodria, the poetry sequence "constellation for an unknown place" is installed for the 2025 season in their spirit house public sculpture art walk in Santa Fe, NM.
This project proposed working, speculatively and from a distance, with the New Mexico landscape, including flora and fauna distinctive to Santa Fe - juniper, piñon, jay, and the constellations in the night sky overhead - to discover what might emerge when writing-with these beings and the place they inhabit. The challenge of writing-with a place, and in particular a landscape, that is unknown to me, allowed for experimental writing methods which included elements of visual poetry that emerged through experimentation with Morse Code.
The resulting four-poem sequence has been printed onto handmade suminagashi (Japanese paper marbling) created by Isabel Winson-Sagan (one half of Maternal Mitochondria). The prospect of sharing my work with a public audience is a distinct honour, as I am especially interested in writing poetry for the purpose of it being encountered ‘in the wild’.
Gratitude to Miriam Sagan and Isabel Winson-Sagan for their support and generous encouragement throughout this project.
