Upon My Return to Iona
This project was initiated during a four-week artist residency on the Isle of Iona at the Iona Hostel on the Lagandorain Croft in the autumn of 2019 as part of their Winter Residency Programme. This time was framed as an exploration of durational place-based practice and a return to a site of personal resonance.
During the month-long residency, a significant shift occurred in the direction of observation; instead of looking up, outward, and away, time was spent looking down, inward, and near. This reposition of perception created necessary friction to reconsider how one is situated in the world and the various methods of representation that might be incorporated in response to place.
The residency, funded by the Canada Council for the Arts and Arts Society Fife, culminated in an informal panel of artist talks and an open studio presentation for islanders and hostel guests. Additionally, a digital visual presentation was provided to the members of Arts Society Fife (asynchronously due to COVID-19). This research activity was integral to developing several modes of practice research, which informed the development of my PhD project.
